How to Create Spring Outfits for Moms on the Go
After working outside the home for many years, I’ve learned some harsh realities about my role as a stay-at-home mom. One of the greatest challenges was within the fashion department–or lack thereof. Who else needs a stay-at-home mom solution to the frumpy mommy uniform?
Since I didn’t have the need–or the budget–for the professional wardrobe I previously wore, my new mom wardrobe soon became an endless mix of baggy pants, worn out T-shirts, and the same old outfit I called my grocery-getting clothes.
Though I was saving money, my attitude suffered. My messy look created a messy lifestyle, and I soon became depressed about my appearance, and worse, my role as a stay-at-home mom.
Adding a few extra pieces to some of the basic staples I already owned, I created a stay-at-home mom solution to the frumpy Mommy uniform I’d been wearing. These go-to clothes are easy to wear, inexpensive, and looked great.
I now use these basics to build several outfits for each season and keep them in mind when I choose accessories or other pieces to stick within my very tight clothing budget (no pun intended).
The truth is, there’s no reason for a stay-at-home mom to spend a lot of money on great-looking clothes. But there’s also no reason she can’t have a great looking Go-To outfit as a Mom on the go.

5 Spring Outfits for Moms on the Go:
1. Cropped Jeans or Ankle Length Pants
There are plenty of great looking cropped pants that are on trend to keep you from looking frumpy. Just make sure to choose the right length and cut for your height. For help, check out The Best Types of Cropped Pants for your Figure.
If your budget allows, add another pair of colorful ankle-length pants to celebrate the beautiful colors of spring. However, keep in mind your basic pair should be versatile–a great khaki or navy would be a good choice.
2. Cotton Button Down Shirt
A crisp cotton button down is a must for any Go-To outfit, regardless of the season. For me, I have three basic cotton button downs: a crisp white, patterned, and Chambray.
Here in the South our Springs can be warmer, so I like to choose a cotton shirt that’s very lightweight that I can cuff the sleeves and wear a few bangles or stylish watch to dress it up.
Other Button-Down Choices
My patterned version is a gingham classic style that’s lightweight and good for layering on cooler mornings or nights. I like the gingham because of it’s simple pattern that still works as a neutral, but adds a little interest under cardigans and paired with khaki pants.
My busy days can be messy–so I have a Chambray shirt that’s a little easier to wear on its own.
I love my Chambray shirt and I’ve owned the same one now for a few seasons.
A Chambray button down can be dressed up or down, layered, and goes with just about everything you own. There have been so many times I’ve grabbed my Chambray shirt, added a colorful necklace or scarf, and ran out the door. It’s an easy piece to keep you looking put together even when you’re not. You know what I’m talking about.
3. Colorful Graphic Tee
Why a graphic tee? Because graphic tees can be forgiving and dress up the basics.
Choose graphics that accentuate the positive and give you shape. Whatever you do, stay out of the men’s department. When shopping for graphic tees, choose a tee that’s fashionable, figure-flattering, and sewn with a woman in mind.
4. Colorful Cardigan
When it comes to a cardigan, there are plenty of great colorful choices. A great cardigan can make a huge difference in your wardrobe by dressing up even the simplest t-shirt and jeans. However, just as with everything else, make sure to choose the right cut for your body shape and a color that looks great against your skin tone.

5. Trendy Flats or Stylish Sneakers
Who says sneakers need to be boring? I personally love my stylish sneakers. They add a pop of color and are comfortable to wear when running errands. Choose a trendy flat or colorful sneaker that is comfortable and will accessorize your outfit–right down to your toes.
Keep it Personal
To create your personal Spring Go-To Outfit, keep in mind your daily activities. Stick with pieces that are comfortable, easy to care for, and work for your local weather. Avoid relying on those stretchy pants and over-sized shirts and choose clothes that fit your figure and your style.
Trust me–you will feel more confident, more productive, and your family will be pleased with the put together look of the more successful you.

I’ve been checking out the clearance racks at Ann Taylor Loft for colorful tops and sweaters I can layer with what I have. I’ve also been picking up a few scarves there and at Target.
Even though I’m still wearing jeans, I feel more stylish and pulled together. I do need to get rid of the hiking boots. I just can’t find anything I like.
