I recently read a great article (“Numbers to Live By” by Stacey Colino RealSimple) providing valuable information about key numbers–blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass, etc.–for better health. The numbers were targets for ideal levels within your body to keep it running at its best.
I admit I haven’t always been the greatest at keeping up with such things, but now that I’m older I’ve learned the value of targeting these numbers for a healthier lifestyle.
I wonder how many of us ignore our spiritual numbers? How often do we even think about our spiritual health?
Are there spiritual numbers to live by?
God’s Word has a special book of Numbers–about wanderings and experiences within a wilderness. And though our favorite passages from the Bible may not be included, it’s wise for us to wrap its message around ourselves as we face our own journey filled with wandering moments.
Numbers 14:9–Do not rebel against the Lord. He is with us. Do not fear them.
Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.
Numbers 13: 30–We are well able to overcome.
Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”
Numbers 14:24–Follow Him fully and you shall inherit His promise.
But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.
Numbers 6:24-26–Thank Him for His blessings of grace and peace.
The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.
How often are we afraid of the wrong things and fail to serve Him?
How often do we waste time by worrying about things that never happen?
How many times do we wander in a wilderness of stubborn rebellion?
How often do we fail to show gratitude for His blessings or give Him thanks?
Are you familiar with this story about Caleb and Joshua and their faithfulness in the desert? The book of Numbers may not be the bedtime story we’d choose to tuck us in at night, but it’s full of valuable numbers to live by. Will we grab hold to its lessons and serve as His faithful servants in our journey today?
