Now you can memorize scripture easily. Here’s a 5 step method that is easy to follow for memorizing scripture quickly this year.
One of the best habits of my own personal Bible study routine is to memorize scripture. This one practice has had the greatest impact on my prayer life, my attitude, and even how I process the ins and outs of everyday living. I’ve tried several memory methods, but I never could keep at it. For me, taking on the challenge of memorizing scripture always seemed overwhelming and some of the methods I tried were too hard to follow until after just a few weeks, or even days, I’d give up and try something else.
However, the 5Rs has been the easiest and most fun for me. I’ve actually been using this method for several years now and I am amazed at how much I’ve learned about God’s Word and how much I’ve grown in every other area of my personal life, too. Here’s how I learn memory verses and how I know you can learn them, too.
5 Easy Steps to Memorize Scripture
Step 1. Record
First, write the scripture reference, or ADDRESS, on the front of an index card. On the back side, record the verse exactly as written (including punctuation, capitalization, etc.), dividing the verse into phrases, or CHUNKS.
Not only will chunking help you internalize the meaning of each phrase, but will also help to visually organize the verse in your memory. Look back over the verse to make sure you have spelled and written the scripture correctly.
Step 2. Read
Now READ it. A lot. Over and over. Take the time to read each phrase, repeating it, until you fully grasp its meaning. Remember, reading the verse in smaller portions (CHUNKS) will aid in the memorization process.
Read through it several times out loud, making sure to include its ADDRESS.
Step 3. Recite
For the next 5 days, you’ll recite the verse, quoting it 25 times on Day One BY MEMORY then decreasing it by 5 each day. Tally the process on the ADDRESS side of the card and only look at the verse when you’re stuck or to double-check your progress.
Remember, this is a personal process that will enable you to internalize your favorite passages. Taking the time to over-learn each scripture will ensure your ability to quote them later when needed.
Step 4. Review
Just as with any other information, review is crucial for this memorization method to work successfully. After your 5 Day Tally, quote the verse once a day for the next 45 weekdays. I mark the 45th day on a calendar to keep from getting confused.
Now it’s time for weaning. Quote the verse only once a week for the next 7 weeks. This is the time to celebrate how well you remember your favorite scripture! This will help to keep the verse filed away for those days when you need it.
Step 5. Revisit
Of course, you should always revisit. Otherwise, all that hard work will fade until you miss a word or two or you can’t remember if it’s found in 1 Peter or James. As you build your Scripture Card collection, develop your own system for review.
Set aside a couple of days each month to pull from your cards, working the memorization process into whatever best suits your own schedule. The important thing is to get to it! Charles Swindoll says, “no other single practice pays greater spiritual dividends” than memorizing scripture. And I agree.
