Lightweight Tops for Spring to Summer
Here in the South, you never know what the weather will feel like. That’s why, as a mom on the go, my fashion finds must be comfortable and lightweight. My go-to favorites are those that are easy to layer or breezy for those afternoons when our weather really heats up. I also choose tops that are easy care that go with anything. I’m loving the variety of lightweight tops this year!
What are the best shirts to wear in hot weather? The best fabrics for the heat of summer are cotton, linen, rayon, and chambray. Choose loose fitting, breathable shirts, or shirts made of moisture-wicking technology to keep you cool and comfortable.
There are plenty of beautiful options for lightweight tops this spring and summer. Here are just a few I’ve rounded up that are easy to wear and can easily be dressed up or down, no matter what the occasion.
Cotton
Nothing says spring and summer like a crisp cotton shirt. The Breton stripe, the gingham button down, and the classic cotton tee or some of basic cotton shirts I grab again and again.
Linen
Linen is super popular in the South because it’s just so light and breathable. Our summer days can get really hot and humid, so you’ll notice lots of linen in our wardrobe, especially while on vacation in a sunny place. It’s just easy and airy and comfortable.
Rayon
I have always loved a rayon blouse for the summer. I wear them with shorts, pants, and can easily dress them up and down, depending on the occasion. I have a couple of rayon popover type shirts that are my go-to picks for everyday because they are so lightweight to wear.
Chambray
Everyone should have a chambray shirt in their closet and I pretty much wear mine all year round. I like that they can be worn so many ways, so through the years I have several different styles in my closet. I have striped, light blue, dark blue, and even a popover version. Even better, a good quality chambray shirt can last you forever. That’s why I have several. They’ve been a part of my wardrobe for a very long time.
Here are a few fashion tips for choosing a top this Spring:
1. Color
It’s all about great color this season–look for lightweight tops in bright blues, ocean tones like coral or sea green, or sunshine yellow that can brighten any ensemble. Just remember your own skin tone and go for colors that will give you an extra boost.
2. Easy Layering
My sleeveless tops are always go-to favorites in warmer months. They’re easy to layer with other lightweight jackets and cardigans that add a little interest to any outfit.
3. Patterns
This time of year, there are plenty of fun patterns for the taking! Take advantage of these fashion favorites that mix well with your neutral basics and your favorite pair of jeans.
4. Ombre
Here’s a great way to add the ombre trend to your wardrobe. It’s wavy feel gives a lightweight, breezy effect, creating a great look this spring.
This season, choose lightweight tops that can carry you into summer. As you shop for your next favorite, keep in mind those basics you already enjoy that can easily mix and match with your new go-to top.
Remember to have fun with it! Spring is all about new growth and new beginnings. This season, add a little fun to your wardrobe by finding a lightweight top that can put a spring in your step and boost your confidence, too.

I love these collections. You may need to help me go shopping for more flattering clothing one day??? I need a girlfriend to do that with. I am not good at picking out clothes that look good on me due to my shape.
Thank you for these tips.

I know what you mean, Crystal. Shopping can be torture! That’s why I stick with the basics and just add a few things here and there for a pop of color or a little change 🙂
