sausage and gravy casserole recipe

This sausage and gravy casserole recipe is a crowd-pleasing favorite. It’s filled with ground breakfast sausage, creamy country-style gravy and topped with a flaky biscuit crust. It’s a breakfast casserole your family and friends will love.

We love breakfast casserole recipes at our house. The boys love how hearty they are and I love how easy they are to toss together in one dish and bake. That’s why I love this sausage and gravy casserole. It’s one of the easiest breakfast casseroles you can throw together and only requires a few ingredients.

It’s a wonderful recipe for potluck breakfast gatherings or even for dinner on busy weeknights when your family is in the mood for a comfort food favorite and you need a hearty meal idea that’s easy and quick.

So don’t keep your breakfast casserole recipes tucked away only for breakfast or brunch ideas on those special occasions. Breakfast casseroles can be a great choice for evening meals, too, when you want to add a little something different to your meal plan.

Here’s how I like to make this one.

Sausage and Gravy Casserole Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 can large can of refrigerated flaky biscuits
  • 1 pound ground breakfast sausage
  • 3 Tbs. flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Spray a 7 x 11 baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  • Cut biscuits into quarters and layer half of the biscuit pieces into the bottom of the dish.
  • Bake for 8 – 10 minutes until the biscuits are lightly browned.
  • While the biscuits are baking, brown the sausage in a skillet until fully cooked. Mix in the flour and allow to cook for about 3 or 4 minutes more.
  • Add the milk and salt and pepper. Stir all the ingredients in the skillet and bring to a low boil until slightly thickened.
  • Pour the gravy mixture over the baked biscuits and top with the remaining biscuit pieced.
  • Bake for 10 minutes, then cover will foil and bake for another 10 minutes until the top biscuits are golden brown. Enjoy!

So here’s a confession. I’m not a big fan of canned biscuits. I was raised on the homemade biscuits, so I never have understood how anyone would want these weird puffy things in a cylinder typed can.

However, I love these flaky canned biscuits. They bake up light and fluffy and sort of melt in your mouth as you eat them. So I’m a believer in canned biscuits for a casserole- especially these flaky ones.

They just bake up so easily to create sort of a light and fluffy crust on the top. So although I don’t like them as biscuits by themselves, we like the real thing, I do think they are perfect for if you want a flaky crust.

And then combine that flakiness with some warm thick country-style sausage gravy? Yes, please. It really is a great dish that my family loves for me to serve on cold winter mornings. Biscuits and gravy, well, that always hits the spot.

Gravy Mix Substitute

I have also used gravy mix packets to make this sausage and gravy casserole. So you can just follow the directions on the packet and mix along with the sausage. Or, you can even leave the sausage out. It is still delicious either way you serve it.

Here’s my all-time favorite gravy mix:  Pioneer Peppered Gravy Mix

You should be able to find it at your local grocery store.

Sausage and gravy casserole can easily be made with just breakfast sausage, a packet of gravy mix, and a can of refrigerated flaky biscuits from the can. It’s still just as delicious and wonderful as long as you use a good country-style gravy mix.
