Ever try to plan the perfect family vacation that only led to a drained bank account and a car load of grouchy kids? Check out this family vacation idea before you make plans this summer. Here’s the one vacation every family should take.

the ONE family vacation

The Perfect Family Vacation

This summer, my family and I will be taking a long-awaited vacation to a small beach town. We are all super excited about it because, first, we weren’t able to take a summer vacation last year and, second, we spent a week in this particular spot a couple of years ago on a whim and now it’s one of our favorite places to go.

To many of our friends, our beach spot doesn’t seem practical; especially since we have Myrtle Beach just a few hours away with loads of entertainment. And, in opposite directions, we could travel down to Orlando for an exciting week at Disney World, or even head north where in a few hours we could reach Pigeon Forge.

But our small beach town is perfect because it’s the reason we’re going on this particular vacation in the first place.

No Agendas

There isn’t much to do there. Besides one small grocery store and a few local eateries, there isn’t really much going on even during peak season. Everything feels relaxed and everything moves at a very slow pace. We spend our days enjoying the beauty of our natural surroundings. We play card and board games in the evenings or just relax on the back porch listening to the sound of the crashing waves.

There may be a few hours spent in the ocean and there are bike rentals and hiking trails if we want to explore our surroundings in the mornings. But mostly, our summer vacation is about each other. There’s no agenda or waiting in long lines for an hour for a ride that lasts 2 minutes. There are no arguments, either, over whose turn is it to choose our entertainment or where to eat that day.

No Overspending Guilt

Since there isn’t many options for spending money, there’s no need to worry about breaking the bank when the week is over. To be honest, that’s how we discovered this hidden treasure a couple of years ago.

We were on a tight budget. Without any wiggle room for extras, we needed to find a fun getaway with free activities without so many temptations to overspend and break the break.

No Distractions

After that week, we realized that our family vacation had been such a wonderful experience, not only because we weren’t suffering from the guilt of overspending, but mostly because all those extra options for entertaining ourselves didn’t crowd out the whole point of our vacation.

That’s when I realized there really is one vacation every family should take. The perfect family vacation isn’t about its location.

Sure, there is plenty of fun to be had at amusement parks and Disney. I love them, too. And there’s no reason, if the budget permits, to stop planning family vacations that are packed with all those wonderful activities every family member can enjoy.

Still, a time away for just doing nothing–no agendas, no distractions, no overspending guilt–is the one vacation every family should set aside a few days for as many times as possible. Whether it’s camping by a quiet lake or spending a weekend at home in your own backyard, this year don’t forget to spend some time with your family with no interruptions.

This summer, have fun making memories doing nothing. It’s the perfect family vacation because time spent together doing nothing can be the most memorable and most enjoyable vacation you’ll ever take.
