Need ideas for family fun? Plan a weekend to visit the Dillard House. Here’s why The Dillard House is the perfect weekend getaway.

If you’ve never visited The Dillard House, I am sorry. You must add it to your family’s to-do list. It’s one of the best restaurants in the Southeast and, even though it’s hours away from where we live, we try to stop by at least once every year. The Dillard House is both a restaurant and inn with one spectacular view of the north Georgia mountains. There’s a big porch filled with rocking chairs where people wait to be served when it’s busy, or just sit and chat after finishing their meal. The dining room is walled with floor to ceiling windows so that every guest can enjoy their meal while also taking in the gorgeous mountaintop view.

And the food? It’s served country-style so that everyone can enjoy as much of the traditional Southern food that they can handle. If you run out of your favorite, your waiter just brings another generous portion. I am totally in love with all their homestyle recipes, and I can’t decide whether it’s the breakfast or dinner menu that I enjoy more.

The Dillard House does get super busy on holidays, so if you want to visit at Thanksgiving or Christmas, you may want to plan that trip way ahead. Overnight guests take priority for the dining hall, so we’ve stayed a couple of times overnight at Thanksgiving to enjoy their special holiday menu without the wait. We simply gave them the time we wanted to eat our Thanksgiving dinner and then they called our room to let us know our table was ready.

There are also plenty of on site activities, like a pool that’s open during the summer months and two fishing ponds that are stocked with trout. Many of the guests schedule horseback riding. You can take a scenic tour of the farm or a river ride. They also have a special horseback ride for kids, too.

I met this guy (see below) at their farm zoo where they keep chickens, goats, pigs, and other farm animals. He was so funny to watch. Every time I pointed my camera, he would stop and pose for me. I think he likes the attention. Anyway, we always spend some time at the farm zoo because the animals can get pretty entertaining.
